Situated between Provence and the mountains, Annot charms visitors with its medieval old town, nestled at the foot of impressive sandstone outcrops and served by the famous Train des Pignes.
History & heritage
Once a trading town on the route linking Provence to Piedmont, Annot has preserved an old town with cobbled streets, vaulted passageways and 15th–17th-century houses adorned with carved lintels. The arrival of the Provence railway at the end of the 19th century opened up the Vaïre Valley to tourism.
Geography & setting
Situated at the confluence of the Vaïre and the Coulomp, Annot is surrounded by the ‘Annot sandstone formations’ – a jumble of monumental rocks popular with climbers – at the junction between the Alps and the Nice hinterland.
