History & heritage
Cited under the name "Scalam" as early as 1060, L'Escale was an important river port in Gallo-Roman times. Excavations carried out in 1960-1961, before the impoundment was filled, yielded an exceptional series of ancient bronzes. The dam, completed in 1963, gave birth to Lac de l 'Escale.
